Technical Education and Curriculum Development Consultant

Mr. Gikaru is an experienced professional in the field of Education and Training. He worked as a curriculum developer for more than 25 years at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Directorate, Applied Sciences Department where he retired as The Head of Department (HOD) in July 2021. During his public working life, he also served as a lecturer in several educational institutions in various regions in the Republic of Kenya from 1984: Secondary Schools, Teacher Training Colleges (Secondary and Primary) and TVET Institutions.

At KICD Mr. Gikaru coordinated the development of several curricula. This task involved routinely constituting teams of experts needed to undertake specialised assignments that included: nationwide training needs assessments; policy analyses and development; curriculum design; content development; curriculum validation and national curriculum implementation. The following are some of the milestones accomplished in the context of his work at KICD and as an expert external consultant amongst others:

  • Development and review of the several curricular implemented in TVET institutions in Kenya
  • Offered consultancy services to Kabete National Polytechnic, enabling the setup of the Hospitality Department (2017 – 2020).
  • Setting up and establishment of Laikiana School of Hospitality (A Private TVET Institution), associated with Laikiana Hospitality Solutions Company Limited, Nairobi, Kenya (2020)
  • Development of Curriculum for IDay, a European Union NGO whose Headquarter i at Copenhagen, Denmark with an East African Mandate that focuses on training of domestic workers (2015)
  • Development of Curriculum for Uwezo Fund Training for the Ministry of Devolution and Planning (2015)
  • Development of Curriculum for Youth Officers serving under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Curriculum for the Talent Academy which had four components: Men Football; Women Volleyball; Music and Dance; and Film and Theatre (2009 -2010)
  • University of Nairobi – (UoN), University of Nairobi’s Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) Implementation Science Fellowship Progrramme: Lead Facilitator and Trainer for: Training Skills Didactics Course (2010- 2015)
  • He has vast experience in the hospitality industry where he has offered consultancy services to five- and four-star hotels including Holiday Resorts Limited who own Neptune Hotels: Neptune Beach Resort, Mombasa North Coast and Neptune Paradise Village, South Coast, Diani amongst others.
  • Presently he is offering professional consultancy services to various government institutions involved in Curriculum Development and Assessment/Examination of TVET Courses and:
  • At Kenyatta University (KU), School of Education and Life Long Learning, Department of Educational Foundations: Part – Time Examination Assistant Invigilator (2011- 2025).

Mr. Waweru possesses a bachelor’s degree in education from Kenyatta University (KU) and is undertaking a master’s degree in Comparative Education and International Studies in the same university. He has undertaken several Management Courses at the Kenya School of Government, Nairobi. He is a trained Assessor/Verifier for Curriculum.
